Speed Hid the Cracks

Over the past eighteen months, speed has been mistaken for strength.

Companies raised faster.

Scaled faster.

Hired faster.

Expanded into new markets faster.

Revenue curves looked impressive.

Valuations followed.

But speed, by itself, does not validate structure.

In many cases, it concealed it.

Cheap capital created momentum.

Momentum created confidence.

Confidence postponed discipline.

When capital is abundant, inefficiencies are tolerated.

When demand surges, operational weaknesses are excused.

When valuation multiples expand, profitability becomes optional.

Acceleration can temporarily compensate for structural flaws.

But it does not remove them.

It delays their exposure.

Across sectors, three cracks have quietly widened beneath rapid growth:

1. Fragile Unit Economics

Customer acquisition costs inflated under competitive pressure.

Retention assumptions relied on temporary behavioral shifts.

Margins narrowed while top-line growth distracted attention.

2. Operational Overextension

Hiring surged ahead of cultural integration.

Expansion preceded process maturity.

Complexity increased faster than managerial control.

3. Dependency on External Conditions

Low interest rates.

High liquidity.

Compressed consumer behaviour.

These were treated as durable conditions rather than temporary accelerants.

The risk is not growth.

The risk is believing that growth validates the model.

When external acceleration slows — and it always does — internal structure is tested.

Speed feels powerful.

It generates headlines.

It attracts capital.

But durability is quieter.

The companies that will endure beyond this cycle are not necessarily the fastest.

They are the most structurally sound.

In periods of rapid expansion, discipline appears conservative.

In reality, it is strategic.

Momentum can elevate a business.

Only structure can sustain it.
